Motorcycle Gear – Dressing the Part

Your every day Motorcycle Gear is made for protection and for fashion. These are some basics but I have not included the Helmet in this post or the Gloves. Just know you do not have to own a motorcycle to dress like a biker but it does make it more believable if you do.

Chaps are sturdy leg coverings consisting of leggings and a belt. They go on your pants with the chaps’ integrated belt, but unlike pants they is no seat and are not joined by anything except the belt. They are made to protect the legs and are made of leather or a leather-like material. Chaps were named after the chaparral (a thorny brush), they were designed to protect the legs while riding on horseback. They were a part of the Cowboy culture of the American West. They are a protective garment to be used for horse riding through brush. Now, they are worn for both practical work purposes and for show use. Chaps are also a big part of the motorcycle scene, Mainly by Harley riders and other cruiser motorcycle riders.

Motorcycle Boots range from above the ankle to below knee. The boots have a low heel for better control and support of the motorcycle. Motorcycle boots are made from a thick, heavy leather and sometimes include energy absorbing and load spreading padding. They are used to protect the rider’s feet while riding and during an accident.

Depending on the boot it may be either a lace up or a zipper or both. This allows a rider to easily get the boot on or off. Also allows for some flexibility for the rider to control the boot’s tightness. Some include an internal quick-lacing system to ensure a tight, but comfortable fit. The soles are usually made of a non-skid material as to not let the rider slip when holding the bike straight up at a stop.

The Leather Jacket is waist-length coat that is usually worn on top of other of clothing, the jacket is typically black, or different shades of brown.  Many Bikers wear the Leather Jacket for protective and fashionable reasons, and to create an intimidating appearance. Most leather jackets are produced in India, Canada, Mexico and the United States, Fabrics like leather such as polyurethane or PVC are used as substitutes to actual animal hide.

The Motorcyclist Vest is usually made of leather just like the jacket. This is where a majority of the unique patches, pins and colors are put. It is also used as a part of protective clothing on the bike. To protect the torso and is also worn to be fashionable. Not all motorcyclist wear colors. Colors are usually a part of a Motorcycle Club.

My vest has a set of wings and the phrase “I Ride My Own.”

Patches range from jokes, to the year someone attended or rode to an event. Some patches support everything from breast cancer awareness to Toys for Tots. There are patches for miles rode, groups belonging to and simple prayers. There are patches for lost riders and loved ones to military service.

Bikers come from all walks of life.
